IF you have ever wandered the streets of Paris and thought about what life must have been like when the opulent palaces were still opulent and the squalid streets were still squalid, then this series is for you. It is written in a style somewhere between Dickens and Tom Mix Serials of the 1950's - the hero is in the stage coach and it is careening off the cliff. Meanwhile back at the ranch ... What struck me most about the life and times of these two distinct classes in old Paris was how much each believed in the differences between themselves and the others. There was no room for empathy, because there was no awareness of an alternative. No one pitied the pig because he wasn't a rabbit. It was what it was. Enter the Prince who ventured out of the court and into the streets to live among the people. The human tragedies and joys that followed him and the host of rich/poor characters made for compelling reading, and in the end, the triumph was to realize the commonality of the human condition. The author has a decidedly utopian political view which he occasionally espouses, but the pages are filled with very human pleasures and pain painted on a backdrop that will make me forever look differently at the neighborhood of Paris.Product details

I am sure the book is great but I'd already had one in progress and ran out of time for borrowing

This is a far-fetched tale about life in 19th century Paris. It has much in common with Dickens and was even published in the same serial format, but at nowhere near the same literary level. It is interesting mainly for the insights it provides into the life, times, and sociology of the period and place. I have only read Volume 1 of the six, and may continue subject to time and inclination. I have also downloaded "The Wandering Jew" by the same author but have not yet had time to read it.
I thought the book was about mysteries more dangerous. It has no suspense

If you would like to catch a glimpse of 19th century Paris, and the language and writing style of storytellers from that era, then you should read The Mysteries of Paris.
The separation of the classes is a cornerstone to this narrative, but Paris, as a location, is certainly not unique. This same story could be told in London, or Berlin, or any large European city of the 1850s. They all functioned the same way, with a huge separation between the haves and the have nots. The author paints a most noble picture of a unique person from that era, a prince (one of the "haves") who wants to help the "have nots." It's a noble theme, and one that probably gained much favor with the "haves" of that era; but the historical truth is that the "noble rich person" was mostly myth. But Eugene Sue's objective was to tweak the conscience of the rich into paying more attention to the less fortunate. Did she succeed? History says no. But one might say that her theme became more relevant as the lower classes became more rebellious in the later half of the century.
As for the writing, adjective lovers will feel like they've entered nirvana. Much too laborious and heavy for most of today's modern readers, but a clear look at what 19th century readers seemed to enjoy. Description, upon description, upon description. The language of description is almost poetic in some sections. I, personally, could not take a steady diet of this type of writing, but it's fun to occasionally step back in time and see how things were done more than 150 years ago.
Dickens wrote about London. Sue writes about Paris. The stories are quite similar, and adjectives abound in both.
